Choosing Keyword Phrases
Keyword Research

Keyword phrases are the words someone will type into a search engine, such as Google or Yahoo! to find your website. The choice of keywords or keyword phrases is sometimes difficult to determine. Choosing the right keyword phrases and the existence of keyword density will ensure your website is found. Choosing the wrong keyword phrases and lack of keyword density will keep potential visitors away and prevent your website from ranking well in the search engine results.

Either way, choosing keyword phrases that are appropriate for your website is crucial when building or rewriting your website.

For optimal search engine results, keyword phrases need to be properly included and positioned within your website content. And, keyword phrases are best when limited to under 5 per website page. In other words, if you decide on 25 different keyword phrases for your website, don't try to use the home page content for all 25. If you can, narrow it down to 5 for the home page, then split the others between your sub-pages. Using this strategy, visitors may enter your website through a sub-page, so we recommend that your sub-pages are well-linked to the rest of your website.

Keyword Research: Choosing Keyword Phrases
Decide a word or group of words which best describes your website's purpose. Then, go to Overture for keyword research. Here, you will learn how many persons are searching for your product or service (in Overture, select Advertiser Center, then Keyword Selector Tool).

Overture will return the number of monthly searches for your keyword phrase and supply a whole list of related keyword phrases.

For Example:

If you sell Italian Designer Leather Shoes, your keyword phrases might include:

Keyword Phrase
*Number of Monthly Searches
Italian Shoes
9700
Italian Man Shoes
950
Italian Designer Shoes
604
Women's Italian Shoes
467
Man Italian Dress Shoes
250
Italian Made Shoes
220
Italian Dress Shoes
200
Italian Leather Shoes
195
Italian Shoes Brand
150

Why Not Just 'Shoes'?
Find the Best Keywords. You probably would not want to choose just 'shoes', or even 'Italian Shoes' for your keyword phrase, since there are over 9,000 searches done each month on these keyword phrases and the likelihood of your website competing for top placement on the results page is slim. Choosing keyword phrases that are slightly less competitive yet highly searched will briing in much better search engine results.

Keyword Phrases and META Keyword Advice
The keyword phrases you choose and around which your website content will be created will be used, in conjunction with your HTML META tags, for search engines to find your website. The best advice is to always include these keyword phrases in your Title, Description, and Keyword META tags.

TIP: Include the closest large city to you in your HTML META tags and keyword phrases - you'll grab a percentage of the market looking for a 'local' vendor. For example, if you are located in Flower Mound, Texas, choose Dallas as part of your keyword phrase for better search engine results.
